Periodontal Maintenance

What is periodontal maintenance?  Periodontal maintenance involves thorough examination and cleanings at specific intervals. Normally, these cleanings do not require local anesthetic. The interval for periodontal maintenance visits varies from patient to patient, but is generally recommended every 3-4 months.

Why is periodontal maintenance important?  After completion of treatment for periodontal disease, it is imperative to continue to have maintenance cleanings with your dentist and periodontist on a regular basis. In fact, periodontal treatment without regular maintenance is one of the major risk factors for increased progression of gum disease and future tooth loss. Periodontal maintenance gives you the best chance to maintain the healthy results obtained after periodontal disease treatment.
